Starting October 12, 2025, the European Union will implement the Entry/Exit System (EES) — an automated border control system for non-EU nationals (including U.S. citizens) traveling to countries that are Member States of the European Union.
Key points to know:
- Passport stamps will be replaced with digital records.
- Biometric data (photo and fingerprints) will be collected on first entry.
- The system will track stays to enforce the 90 days in 180 days rule.
- Applies to travelers from visa-exempt countries (including the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia) and holders of short-stay Schengen visas.
Travelers should allow extra time at immigration during their first trip after EES goes live.
